Session Description:

It is expected that during the coming 20 years, the nature of doing business in Africa will completely change and digital technology will play an important role within the development of the private sector. New initiatives, changing technology, new start-ups in Africa will expand operations and businesses thus increasing the reach and impact. Already, almost 10% of GDP transactions in Sub-Saharan Africa occur through mobile money, compared to 2% in regions such as Europe or the United States. And, the contribution of fintech to Africa’s GDP is expected to increase to $150 billion by 2022.

Healthcare is one area where technology is a proving to be gamechanger. Across Africa, digital innovations are leading to more equitable redistribution of healthcare services and funds, while reducing costs and increasing efficiency. Technology provides real-time data to enhance transparency, leading towards better health outcomes and offering opportunities to transform health systems by generating data to guide decision making for patients, providers and payers.

As countries emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, leveraging mobile and digital platforms could be key for driving progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa.

Convened by the PharmAccess Group, this session will share how technology plays a vital role in achieving returns on the African continent. What are the contributions of companies, investors and organizations in the technological transformation of health systems in Africa? Experts will come together to discuss the challenges and opportunities for scaling digital tools to increase access to quality healthcare in the region.
